Rediscovering My Roots - A Veteran’s Journey Through K-pop

Growing Up Korean-American - The Quiet Distance

Growing up Korean-American meant living between two worlds.
At home, we spoke Korean and followed traditions.
Outside, I tried hard to fit into American life.

Over time, my Korean side felt quieter, almost like a distant memory.
I was proud, yes—but it was a pride I rarely spoke about.

Deep inside, I knew something was missing.

Military Life - Duty First, Identity Later

Serving in the U.S. Army taught me duty, discipline, and sacrifice.
But it didn’t leave much room for personal exploration.

My focus was survival, mission success, and brotherhood.
Heritage became a background detail—important, but not urgent.

Years later, after my service ended,
the question lingered:
"Who am I beyond the uniform?"

The First Spark - Hearing K-pop for the First Time

It was a simple moment in a Seoul café—
hearing BTS for the first time.

The language was Korean, but the emotions needed no translation.
Hope, pain, resilience—
they were universal, yet somehow deeply personal too.

That spark was the beginning of a journey back to myself.

Lyrics That Felt Personal - Messages Beyond Language

Songs like BTS’s "Spring Day," IU’s "Love Poem," and BLACKPINK’s "Stay"
weren’t just music.
They were letters written to the quiet parts of my soul.

Lyrics about longing, self-love, and enduring hardship
mirrored the struggles I had lived but never fully named.

For the first time, Korean wasn’t just a language I understood.
It was a language that understood me.

Living in Korea - Feeling My Heritage in Everyday Life

Moving to Korea made everything real.
The food, the smells, the small gestures of kindness—
it was all familiar and yet breathtakingly new.

K-pop wasn't just on playlists anymore.
It played in every shop, every cab ride, every city street.
It stitched itself into the fabric of my daily life.

Through that music, I didn’t just live in Korea.
I belonged.

Healing and Pride - What K-pop Gave Back to Me

K-pop gave me back something precious:
a living, breathing connection to my Korean roots.

It showed me that heritage isn’t just about looking back.
It’s about carrying the best parts forward.

Through the voices of BTS, BLACKPINK, IU, and so many others,
I found pieces of myself I didn’t even know I had lost.

And in finding them, I found a new kind of pride.

Carrying My Roots Forward - A Journey That Continues

Reconnecting with my Korean roots isn’t something I finished.
It’s something I live every day.

Every song I hear, every moment I spend here,
I weave a little more of my past into my present.

Thanks to K-pop,
I now walk through the world knowing exactly who I am—
a Korean-American, a veteran, and a proud part of something bigger than myself.

And the journey isn’t over.
It’s only just beginning.
